Background of the Study

The nursing profession is widely recognized as one of the most stressful occupations due to long working hours, high patient loads, emotional exhaustion, and exposure to traumatic medical situations (WHO, 2024). Nurses play a critical role in healthcare delivery, yet they often experience significant levels of work-related stress, which can lead to burnout, reduced job satisfaction, and even mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression.

In Nigeria, workplace mental health education is still in its early stages, with many healthcare institutions lacking structured programs to help nurses manage stress effectively. In Taraba State, nurses face additional challenges such as poor working conditions, staff shortages, and inadequate psychological support, further exacerbating workplace stress (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2023). Without proper mental health education, nurses may struggle to cope with occupational stress, leading to absenteeism, decreased productivity, and poor patient care.

This study seeks to assess the impact of workplace mental health education on reducing stress levels among nurses in Taraba State. By examining the effectiveness of stress management training and support programs, the research aims to provide recommendations for integrating mental health education into nursing practice.

Statement of the Problem

Despite growing awareness of workplace mental health, many healthcare institutions in Nigeria, including those in Taraba State, lack structured mental health education programs for nurses. As a result, many nurses experience high levels of stress with little or no coping mechanisms provided by their workplaces (Okafor & Musa, 2023).

Work-related stress can negatively affect nurses' mental and physical well-being, leading to exhaustion, reduced work efficiency, and increased medical errors. Without proper interventions, these challenges may contribute to high staff turnover rates and compromised healthcare delivery. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of workplace mental health education in reducing stress among nurses and recommend strategies for improving stress management within healthcare facilities in Taraba State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the prevalence and causes of workplace stress among nurses in Taraba State.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of workplace mental health education in reducing stress levels.

3. To recommend strategies for improving workplace mental health programs for nurses.

Research Questions

1. What are the major causes of workplace stress among nurses in Taraba State?

2. How effective is workplace mental health education in reducing stress levels among nurses?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve workplace mental health education in healthcare facilities?

Research Hypotheses

1. Workplace stress among nurses in Taraba State is significantly high due to poor working conditions.

2. Workplace mental health education has a positive effect on reducing stress levels among nurses.

3. Implementing structured mental health education programs will improve nurses' coping strategies and job satisfaction.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in public and private healthcare facilities in Taraba State, assessing their stress levels and evaluating the impact of workplace mental health education programs. Limitations may include difficulties in measuring stress objectively and potential reluctance from participants to disclose personal stress-related experiences.
